17 anni di costruzione, più di 25 anni di dibattiti politici, 57 km di lunghezza, fino a 2300 metri di profondità sotto le Alpi, 1 occasione mancata (la Porta Alpina), centinaia di minatori, ingegneri, architetti e periti di ogni genere per costruirla e 9 caduti da ricordare. Sono tanti i numeri di quest’opera colossale che è la galleria di base del San Gottardo.

Dall’Australia alla Norvegia passando per la Cina: tutto il mondo ha parlato di Pollegio e Rynächt, della Leventina e del Canton Uri. Un ultimo giorno di gloria per questi posti che saranno non scavalcati ma «sottopassati» dalla nuova trasversale alpina. Ma le sfumature critiche per me ora finiscono qui, perché oggi è il giorno di festeggiare un’opera che collega nord e sud, Uri e Ticino, dialetto lombardo e svizzero-tedesco, Milano e Zurigo. E per quanto mi riguarda anche i due posti che io chiamo casa.

17 Jahre Bauzeit, mehr als 25 Jahre lange Diskussionen auf politischer Ebene, 57 km lang, bis 2300 Meter tief unter den Alpenspitzen, 1 verpasste Chance (die Porta Alpina), hunderte von Mineuren, Ingenieuren, Architekten und allerlei Spezialisten und 9 Tote, um die wir trauern. Die Zahlen dieses Kolosses - des Gotthard-Basistunnels - sind viele.

Von Australien nach Norwegen über China: die ganze Welt schaut heute nach Pollegio und Rynächt, zum Leventina und zum Kanton Uri. Ein letzter glanzvoller Tag des Ruhmes für diese Ortschaften, welche bald von der neuen Alpentransversalen «unterfahren» werden. Aber ich setze diese kritischen Nuancen sofort beiseite, denn heute gilt es, dieses Werk zu feiern. Ein Werk, welches den Norden mit dem Süden, den Kanton Uri mit dem KantonTessin, den lombardischen Dialekt mit dem Schweizerdeutschen, Milan und Zürich verbindet. Und - für mich wichtiger - die zwei Orte, die ich «Zuhause» nenne.

17 years of construction, more than 25 years of political discussion, 57 km 2300 meters underneath the peaks of the Alps, 1 lost chance (the Porta Alpina), hundreds of miners, engineers, architects and specialists at work, and 9 dead to mourn. These are only some of the many numbers of this colossal work: the Gotthard base tunnel.

Australia, Norway and even China are talking about Pollegio and Rynächt, about Leventina and the Canton of Uri. A last day of glory for these places, which will be soon «underpassed» by the new Alp transit line. But the critics end here now: today we celebrate this amazing work that connects North to South, the Canton of Uri to the Canton of Tessin, the Lombard dialect to the Swiss German, Milan to Zurich. And, as my personal note, the two places that I call home to each other.
