Don't touch the grass, kids!
The worst poison was not the radioactivity, but the lies.

I clearly remember that day, even if I was only six and this happened 30 years ago. I was at a friend's place and I was playing outside (that's what we used to do back then). Suddenly my friend's mother ran out of the door and said: "Come in at once! Don't touch the grass, it's poisoned!". Only at least twenty years later I noticed how traumatic this experience has actually been.
My friend's mother just heard in the radio about that something had happened in Chernobyl and that this was affecting big parts of western Europe, including Ticino. As you will see in the documentary posted below (2006, twenty years later, only one of many, which I absolutely recommend to watch), this is what scared and upset many of us that lived through catastrophes like that: the poison was everywhere and nobody - but some administrators that whanted to cover the accident - knew about it.
Ricordo benissimo quel giorno, anche se tutto ciò successe 30 anni fa, quando avevo solo sei anni. Eravamo in giardino a giocare, da un'amica (è così che passavamo il tempo allora). D'un tratto sua madre spalancò la porta gridando: "Venite subito dentro! Non toccate l'erba: è velenosa!". Solo una ventina d'anni più tardi mi resi conto di quanto traumatica sia stata quest'esperienza.
La madre di questa mia amica aveva appena sentito ciò che era successo giorni prima a Cernobyl e che quell'incidente stava ora avendo conseguenze in gran parte dell'europa occidentale, Ticino incluso. Come potrete vedere dal documentario (del 2006, in occasione del ventennale, uno dei tanti sul tema, che consiglio assolutamente di guardare) fu proprio questo a spaventare ed indignare molti di noi che vissero durante questa catastrofe, come molte altre: il veleno era ovunque, ma nessuno lo sapeva, eccezion fatta per pochi amministratori che volevano tenere il tutto segreto.
